Where does the food grown by Hands for Harvest end up?

All produce grown will be donated to Greater Lake Food Bank of Minneapolis and PRISM (People Responding in Social Ministry) of Golden Valley, MN. These food shelves have the means to distribute the produce to where it is needed most.

How far from the Twin Cities is the volunteer farm?

For 2009, the produce is being grown approximately 60 miles southwest of Minneapolis, or about an hour's drive.

What crops are being grown on the volunteer farm?

This first year we are focusing entirely on growing potatoes, which is a crop that stores very well for longer periods of time and fulfills a primary dietary need.

Why should I volunteer?

Because it's fun, and you will be helping people in need at the same time! Also, one of the most important donations one can make is of their time. Not everyone has money to donate to causes close to their heart. Giving of one's time is often even more valuable, and is often the most rewarding way to give of oneself. It allows you to take ownership and have a direct impact towards the cause close to your heart, while being transformed and meeting wonderful people at the same time.

How many volunteers can come at a time?

Depending on the task at hand (planting, cultivation, or hilling) we typically will try to have enough tools for groups of about 20-25 volunteers at a time. All volunteer sign-up times are for 2-hour blocks.

What should I wear?

I hope you're not afraid to get dirty! You will be working in a field, in the dirt, so wear an old pair of jeans and tennis shoes that you don't mind getting some dirt on. Typically if the weather is sunny and the field is dry you won't get very dirty at all, but if the field is slightly damp from a recent rainfall your clothes might indeed get dirty!

Should I bring anything?

You can bring work-gloves if you have them, but we will always try to have several pairs available for people that don't have work-gloves to bring along. Also, feel free to bring your own gardeing tools, depending on the task at hand (drainage spades used for planting, garden hoes and cultivators used for hilling and weeding).

Are beverages provided?

We will always have water on hand, but feel free to bring any other type of non-alcoholic drink along to help stay hydrated after doing some work.
